Frontline Embedded Design Contest - 2007.


Inaugural Function.

The contestís Inaugural function was jointly arranged by Frontline Electronics and Government College of Engineering, Salem, contestís Academic Partner, in the college on 17 August 2007.

Dr. R. Radhakrishnan, Vice Chancellor, Anna Unversity/ Coimbatore inaugurated the contest by releasing the contest documents to the students. During his speech, the Vice Chancellor explained in detail about the need of improving studentís Design Skill set apart from what they learn in the curriculum. He pointed out that these kinds of contests become the required platform for the students to conceive and develop their own products or the solutions. He also advised the students to continue working on their ideas to create intellectual properties catering to the needs of the industries in the coming days. He also stressed the need of acquiring the Future Compatible Skill set to manage the challenges students can take up in their career.

Mr. Hideyuki Kobayashi, Senior Manager, Global Outsourcing, Renesas, Japan who has flown in exclusively for the inaugural function graced the function as the Guest of Honour. During his speech, he assured the continued support of Renesas, Japan for this contest and advised the student community to use the contest to implement their innovative ideas and concepts. To mark the occasion, he released the Designer Tool Kit to the participating students. Mr.Kobayashi also has released the Electronics Maker magazine that contains information about the contest and the R8C/Tiny controllers. Electronics Maker is the contestís Media Partner

Mr. K.V. Yashoranjan, Manager, Hitachi India, who is managing Renesas activities in India has introduced Renesas to the gathering and explained about Renesas activities in India. He also explained about the association of Frontline Electronics with Renesas.

Mr. M.Balaji, Technical Director, Frontline Electronics explained about various aspects of the design contest in detail. He said that the contest is organized to encourage the students take up more creative hardware design challenges using 16 bit microcontrollers of Renesas, R8C/Tiny. Students can participate as an individual or as a team of not than 5 members. The contest is open to the students studying degree courses in engineering colleges of both Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Students perusing any branch of the electrical sciences are eligible to participate in this contest.

He also informed that the students have to get a Design Tool Kit costing Rs 2,000/ that comprises specially project ProtoBoard along with all the required software tools. Students should register before December 2007 giving a brief outline of their projects and they should submit their projects by the end of April 2008. A team of experts from the industry will evaluate the projects and select the best projects for the total prize money of Rs 100,000/. An award function will be held in the college in August 2008, he concluded.

On behalf of the college, Professor, Department Electronics and Communication Engg. of GCE, Mr. M.Chandrasekar welcomed the gathering and HOD/ECE, Professor, Dr. R.S.D. Wahida Banu delivered the Presidential address of the function.

The inaugural function was well attended by staff members and students of the nearby engineering colleges. The contestís Media Partner, Electronics Maker was represented by Mr. Arvind Kumar and Mr. Saravanam in the function.
